Choosing Safe Aquarium Decors

April 5th, 2010

One cannot simply leave the aquarium looking barren and empty. The fish needed a decorated environment not for the sake of fashion but for them to be comfortable and behave naturally. The decors and ornaments can serve part as their shelter and hiding places. Besides, decorating an aquarium is fun. And, it is probably the most anticipated part in setting up this hobby.

Before introducing any decorative ornament into your tank, make sure that each item is labeled safe for aquarium use. Buying items that are not rendered safe have the potential of leaking hazardous substances into your aquarium and can slowly poison your fish. Also don’t get items that have metal parts in them because they can rust and contaminate your tank.

You should also be aware that freshwater and saltwater aquariums have differing environments. As such, you can neither put corals and seashells in freshwater nor can you put natural driftwoods in saltwater aquariums. Ensure that what you put is safe for the aquarium environment that you have. Do thorough research or ask an expert about the best items for your type of tank.

Be careful in putting stones, rocks or driftwoods that you have picked from your backyard, lake or beach. These items may not be safe for aquarium use. Backyard stones and rocks, for instance, may have absorbed pesticides in them. Driftwoods may bring in harmful bacteria into your tank that can cause your fish to die. It is, therefore, recommended that you buy aquarium supplies from your local fish store so you can ensure that all the decors and ornaments that you have are labeled safe for your aquarium use.

Real reason for Aquarium Lighting

March 22nd, 2010

It is not always correct to say that aquarium lights are installed to replicate an aquatic world. In the real aquatic habitat, there is little light. Only in shallow waters is the aquatic environment illuminated although lighting is not that clear compared to what is created by aquarium lights. Too much light for some aquatic habitat can be disadvantageous as some fishes are not accustomed to it. There are also aquatic plants which are does not grow well in brightly lighted environment. Thus, for one to replicate an aquatic world, he has to study the real lighting that applies to it. With proper lighting, real beauty of the aquatic world that one hopes to replicate comes to life.
The real purpose of putting pool supplies like aquarium lighting is to accentuate the fish tank design that has been conceptualized by the hobbyist. It is installed in the aquarium tank to give additional aesthetic value. There are different lighting for different aquariums. For freshwater aquariums there are two kinds: a screw type incandescent bulb and another is the fluorescent tube. Most freshwater aquarium hobbyists prefer to use compact fluorescent lighting. This is because of its ability to provide a brighter light than the ordinary incandescent bulb.
Freshwater aquarium hobbyists should think more than the aesthetic value that its choice of lighting will bring. Fresh water aquarium are complicated as there are live plants which are included in the set up that require stronger lighting. As such, it is highly recommended that hobbyists should use compact fluorescent bulbs and high intensity bulbs which supports plant growth.
